On June 11, 2025, Gov. Reynolds signed HF 330, which amends Iowa’s coverage mandates for autism spectrum disorder treatments. Specifically, the new law prohibits group health plans and insurance policies in the state from imposing coverage limits on the number of outpatient visits for applied behavior analysis and the number of visits with an autism service provider for treatment of autism spectrum disorder. The bill also removes references to annual limits to conform to federal mental health parity requirements. The legislation applies to insurance policies delivered, issued, continued, or renewed in Iowa on or after January 1, 2026.
Employers that sponsor fully insured group health plans in Iowa should consult with their carriers and amend their plans as necessary to conform to the new legislation. Self-insured group health plans are generally exempt from state insurance laws; however, they are still required to comply with federal mental health parity requirements.
