The OHS Group of NFP helped improve safety awareness and decrease workplace accidents.

By having an OSHA trainer update the chemical safety program of an industrial products manufacturer, the OHS Group of NFP brought our client into OSHA compliance.

After losing their HR and safety manager, a manufacturer faced potentially significant safety challenges. They needed immediate safety oversight but weren’t in a position to train someone for the role at that time. Additionally, the company struggled to keep up with worker safety training, machine guarding and training around the handling of hazardous chemicals. To address the urgent safety oversight and training needs, Michael Smith, NFP's Safety and Risk Control Consultant with the OHS Group, and the client agreed that Michael would provide safety management one day a week for a year.

Michael conducted safety assessments on all machines, which were produced in-house with close tolerances. Michael closely observed machine usage, engaged with operators and identified potential hazards. He reviewed roughly 45 machines and recommended to fit half of them with proper guards. After these changes were made, machine guarding accidents were eliminated.

As an authorized OSHA trainer, Michael also delivered essential safety training sessions for the workers. This hands-on approach addressed the company’s need for regular and comprehensive safety education.

In addition, Michael reviewed the chemicals used in the facility, along with their safety data sheets. He ensured that all chemicals, both new and existing, were properly evaluated for hazards and provided specialized training on chemical safety, including interpreting safety data sheets.

Outcome

The OHS Group’s involvement led to a significant increase in safety awareness and training among workers. The relationship built during the OSHA course fostered trust, allowing Michael to support the company’s safety needs over several years. As a result, there was a notable decrease in workplace accidents, and the client retained the OHS Group’s services, solidifying a long-term partnership.
